From what I’ve read from you, it’s highly likely you’re from a family without a father or have a personal connection with such a dynamic and therefore feel the need to protect this notion of how hard-working and earnest single mothers are, but you’re overreaching here. Many single mothers are noble and work hard, but they’re great BECAUSE they protect their children and try to give them a positive upbringing. Surely, what we see here cannot be identified as a positive upbringing and it seems that, to an extent, there is a lack of effort from the mother here.

For one, I’m neither a single parent nor was I raised by one, so your assumption would be incorrect. I do however have friends who are single parents and who have encountered stigma for doing many of the things that others say make the FL irresponsible. However I have also encountered dual parent families who have not only deliberately done some of the things the FL has been accused of doing but at the same time never face stigma for their actions..
Secondly, a mother thinking she can quickly deal with her business, just as any mom often does, while her son is in the bathroom then her brain momentarily forgetting him for one brief moment, only makes her irresponsible if you think being a mom should automatically enable you to force your brain to remember everything at every moment, I guess. Brains just don’t work that way though. Like I said on a different chapter BOTH my parents forgot me one time and drove away in the car even though I was standing right next to the car door when it happened.. My brother was the one who told them they left me behind. Do I blame them? Nope. I would have if they had done it deliberately though. That would have been irresponsible.
Thirdly, if I got into a fight at school my parents shouldn’t be held responsible for not being on hand to stop me. It’s either the school’s responsibility for not intervening before the conflict escalated or my own. Yes they should teach me how to avoid getting into conflict but if they’re not nearby they can’t be blamed for not being able to intervene.
Your next point about letting Momo go out to meet a stranger, is she supposed to assume her son’s lying when he says he’s going to meet the friend he met earlier, is she supposed to immediately shake herself awake just because she’s a mom and question her son (being a single mom often makes one more tired not less though) and/or is telling him to send her his location not evidence of her trying to ensure his safety now?
Lastly the biggest piece of evidence that she is trying to keep him safe *is* the message she sent to him when the police came to arrest her. It would have been irresponsible to have him come back and be confronted with his mother being arrested. At that point she figured her son was at a mutual friend’s (meaning someone they *both* knew) place. Like her I doubt, with the way the police approached her right off the bat, that they would have slowed their rush to interrogate her to accommodate any difficulties she might have been having.

You’re missing the point, momentarily forgetting about your child happens, but it cannot be described as anything but being careless, which is my point. Imagine if a soldier marches to the battlefield without his weapon – naturally, other things are on his mind and he’s worrying about other circumstances, but you need to prioritize and think about what’s important. Sure, he packed all his rations and knows how to march with honor, but what happens when he gets to the battlefield and now he realizes he’s unarmed? Shit out of luck because even though he was stressed and had other things on his mind, he did not pay attention to what was REALLY important. For a mother, especially a single mother, her child ought to be her primary interest. What’s the point in getting money to feed a child if there is no child? So that leads me to my next point, you say that parents cannot be responsible for being unable to stop their children from getting into fights and it is also their duty to educate their children about the dangers of fighting – I completely agree with you on this point. But what you missed is that her lapse in judgement (lack of overall responsibility/attention or whatever you want to call it for leaving her kid in public) has now led him into a situation where he has gotten into a fight that could have KILLED him. Sure, mistakes happen, I don’t disagree with that. But to say that that mistake is not irresponsible is where the line should be drawn, and that’s all I’m really trying to say. Nobody is saying she has an easy life, or that she’s being treated fairly, or that she doesn’t have a lot of responsibilities to juggle. But, I think there’s a fair point to be made in the notion that she’s an irresponsible parent – and who knows, people reform and one can only hope that she recognizes her lapse in judgement and learns from it. So let’s speak to the third point now, she doesn’t have to assume her son is lying but she also hasn’t conducted any due diligence in this situation whatsoever. What if the FBI started hiring all applicants without doing background checks? What if your elementary school teacher was a child molester who got the job because the school system decided not to do a background check? What if racist police officers are hired and then put on duty immediately? My point with these examples are that to check someone’s background is a way to insure that the other party one is dealing with isn’t inherently nefarious or has a track record of malevolence. She’s okaying the fact that her son is going to meet another stranger. If that doesn’t raise red alarms, it should. I’m not saying that parents need to do background checks on who their children are going out alone to meet, but, they should at least have a generally idea of who they’re sending their children out to. Again, this would fall under the responsible parent category – understanding who your child is engaging with. Any child’s safety COULD be at risk when they’re going out alone to meet strangers. So to directly answer your question, YES, she is supposed to shake herself awake and get out of bed if it means knowing exactly who were child is about to engage with and where. Doesn’t matter how tired you are, if you love your kid and want them to be safe, then don’t flip a coin and hope they’re safe. Do your parental duty to ensure beyond a reasonable doubt that it’s safe. As soon as a relationship between her and the stranger is established where she can confirm it’s safe for her child, then she can be more lax in the future – but that is AFTER she’s been diligent and responsible. So to tack on to this train of logic, letting her son stay the night at this strangers place is negligent. As the police are booking her, if she really doesn’t want her son to see it, then she ought to think to send him to relatives, or a day care, or hang out at the police station. She should put her child’s safety on those who have a vested interest in protecting him. And btw, naturally, police act differently depending on the nation/region/city, but for the most part, police serve both governemental and local interests. That is to say, they cannot simply leave a child motherless and thus the police would likely be forced into a position where they have to find a safe place to send the child. I don’t know what they do over in Asia (where this story presumably takes place), but in America if your parent(s) are arrested, the child is sent to caregivers who will ensure they’re protected and cared for until the parent(s)’ situation is figured out. So at least in America, there’s literally never a reason to send your child to stay anywhere where they could be unsafe when the police can take care of it for you. While I understand that certain Asian countries (such as China) don’t have child protection services that are directly involved in the protection of children, they have governmental agencies that are equipped to deal with children, at least temporarily. So to recap, I still think there’s a VERY strong case for why she’s an irresponsible mother, but we can also empathize with the difficulties she has to face. Some women are born great mothers and others have to step up to the plate and grow into the role. In this case, I’d argue it’s the latter; yet, as long as she learns from her mistakes, who’s to say she won’t be a great mother as her nurturing instincts cultivate and grow alongside her child.
